Establishment Background
Aerospace technology encompasses fields such as mechanical, electronic, materials, communications, navigation, control, and systems engineering. It serves as an indicator of a nation’s overall technological, industrial, and defense capabilities. Its industry characteristics include high product added value, strict quality requirements, strong interconnections with other industries, and the need to apply advanced technologies from related fields. Therefore, aerospace can effectively drive industrial upgrading. Additionally, Taiwan’s location at the geographic center of Asia-Pacific air transport is highly advantageous for combining civil aviation, industrial, and commercial development, positioning Taiwan as a regional operation and transfer hub. In light of this, the government selected the aerospace industry as one of the ten emerging industries that Taiwan urgently needed to develop in the 21st century. The government is committed to promoting Taiwan as an Asia-Pacific operations and transfer center, and with Taiwan joining the World Trade Organization (WTO) and enabling cross-strait direct flights, the civil aviation industry is expected to flourish further. Consequently, there is an urgent domestic demand for aircraft engineering professionals.
Department of Aircraft Engineering Graduate Institute of Aeronautics and Electronic Technology Bachelor’s Program in Aircraft Maintenance
To promote the development of the civil and military aviation industry, aviation services, and aviation sports & leisure industries, achieving the goals of expanding economic capacity and creating high-value-added industries, while integrating into global supply chains to position Taiwan as a hub in the aviation industry. It aims to promote Taiwan’s aerospace industry as a research, manufacturing, maintenance, and logistics support center for aircraft, engines, systems, and components in the Asia-Pacific region. Hence, the Department of Aircraft Engineering was established. In response to advancements in aeronautics and electronic technology and the needs of related industries, and leveraging Taiwan’s aerospace and electronics industry development advantages, the institute focuses on research and development of forward-looking aeronautics and electronic technologies. It aims to cultivate high-level R&D personnel in aerospace and electronic technology, thereby enhancing the nation’s research capacity in these fields. Thus, the Graduate Institute of Aeronautics and Electronic Technology was established. To meet the demand for civil aviation maintenance certification and professionals, the Bachelor’s Program in Aircraft Maintenance was added in September 2018, and the Aircraft Maintenance Training Center was established in September 2018. In February 2019, it was certified as a CAA B1.1 training organization by the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA).
